The Opiate of the Homeless: Free Marijuana Samples

Every industry has an organization that promotes its product, from Florida oranges to beef. Typically, these are organized as non-profits that promote the benefits of the product as a public service. While the people in the industry do usually believe  that their product is beneficial, the fact remains that these non-profits exist to do well by “doing good.”

With that in mind, consider this story from the Washington Times: “Charity gives free marijuana joints to homeless in Denver on Christmas Eve.”

A nonprofit in Denver, Colorado, gave away thousands of free, pre-rolled marijuana joints to the homeless and anyone else who wanted one on Christmas Eve, in an out-of-the box attempt to raise awareness about homelessness.

“Merry Christmas and a puff puff New Year’s!” said one woman who accepted a joint from the Cannabis Can volunteers, a local ABC affiliate reported.

Nick Dicenzo, Cannabis Can founder and the organizer of the pot hand-outs, told reporters that he is trying to raise awareness about homelessness in Colorado by bringing people together with marijuana and encouraging them to donate to the cause.

” ‘Cannabis can make a difference,’ is kind of what we’re standing for,” Mr. Dicenzo told ABC.

He hopes to raise enough money to buy several RV’s and provide restrooms and showers for those in need.

“A lot of the people we spoke with really were just like, ‘If I had regular access to a shower and a haircut, my life would be so much better. I’d have so much more opportunity’,” Mr. Dicenzo told ABC.

Here’s one of the local stories the Washington Times relies on. You can watch the video and see that Nick Dicenzo, the founder of Cannabis Can, sounds just as incoherent in person as he does in print. Why not hand out airline hard liquor bottles to the homeless and say you are helping them by raising awareness?

You have seen this at Costco or Sam’s Club. Dicenzo and his elves are giving away free samples. This is a commercial investment.

What kind of local businesses would support an organization called “Cannabis Can”?

Panhandlers don’t have a lot of money but they probably can get enough to buy a single joint on a fairly regular basis. So it would make sense for the marijuana merchants in Denver to want to occasionally dump some excess product on the homeless to wean them away from the traditional staples of whiskey and enhanced wine. Since there are no real benefits to promote, Cannabis Can had to come up with some lame projects to associate with the product.

But who is Dicenzo fooling? Free marijuana samples are not going to give people opportunities, nor are they going to make them take advantage of opportunities or look for opportunities. As a general rule, people don’t better themselves while they are getting stoned. This is yet another attempt to keep people contented with their bad situations and uninterested in trying to improve their lives.
